Beirut Sunset, watercolour, Jamelie Hassan
Our hearts go out to all the people of Lebanon. Our condolences to all whose families and friends are suffering in the midst of the horrific devastation following the explosion that occurred at the Beirut port on August 4, 2020. The massive blast resulted in at least 158 deaths, 6,000 injuries, and made an estimated 300,000 people homeless.

The Government of Canada will match your donations to the Humanitarian Coalition between August 4 and 24 up to a maximum of $2 million. Read the release here.

Jamelie Hassan captured the beauty of Beirut, with this watercolour of the view of the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.

Hundreds of Canadian artists, including London artists Jamelie Hassan and Ron Benner signed a public letter calling upon the Government of Canada to honour its ,commitment to poverty reduction and instate a Basic Income Guarantee. The letter calls upon the Government of Canada to implement a universally accessible and unconditional basic income program that guarantees an income floor to anyone in need.

The letter highlights that in the current pandemic’s wake, the arts communities are evolving in new and exciting ways. Artists, writers, technicians, and performers will continue to create and to inspire the world around them. Their creation of novel forms of digital culture, music and performance art, online entertainment, movies, literary works, arts and crafts will allow people to weather times of solitude, hardship, and ruptures in social behaviour and contribute to their overall well-being. In memory of Bob McKaskell 1943-2020
Ron & I received the sad news that our good friend and independent curator and writer, Bob McKaskell died on June 30, 2020. ago from cancer. He was living between Port Dover, Ontario and Oaxaca, Mexico. While in Oaxaca he decided to study Spanish and he had just initiated a program of curating exhibits of Oaxacan artists in his apartment located in the centro historico of Oaxaca. Ron and I had the pleasure of enjoying time with Bob in Oaxaca and shared in his enthusiasm for the vibrant cultures of Mexico. He was a great cook, an excellent gardener and his pursuit of knowledge was startling wide-reaching. Anyone who knew Bob, understood that his sometimes stubborn nature contributed to his ability to intensely focus in a very particular and detailed way to whatever subjects grabbed his interest.

Bob taught Contemporary Art History for many years at Western University. He was a huge supporter of both Canadian and international artists and had a commitment to challenging art practices including conceptual art, performance works and independent artists' projects. While in London, he was involved in programming at The Embassy Cultural House, the Forest City Gallery, Museum London and the McIntosh Gallery.  He was one of the curators at the Windsor Art Gallery and offered his home so that I could create an off-site installation Boutros Al Armenian/Mediterreanen Modern in 1997. He also worked at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary where he built strong friendships and made contributions to the arts community across Canada.

I have so many fond memories of my time with Bob - especially close to my heart is the survey exhibition he curated Embassy Cultural House - 1983 - 1990 at Museum London in 2012.

I have had the opportunity to work with Soheila in previous exhibitions and it is always a pleasure to see our shared sensibilities and connections in our work.

Indwell's architectural image of Embassy Commons, 2020
Exciting news - Indwell's new affordable housing project on the site of the old Embassy Hotel (744 Dundas Street) has been named the "Embassy Commons" in tribute to the location’s past history.  One of my watercolours from the Embassy Hotel series commissioned by my sister and former owner Helen Haller in 1978 - which she donated to the collection of Museum London in the summer of 2019 - will be featured on one of the facade walls of the building. The new name was officially announced at the Hope@Home Virtual Gala on June 12. Hassan Law was a sponsor of this event. For more information, please go to Indwell's page on the the project.

Brown University establishes Mahmoud Darwish Chair in Palestinian Studies

Jamelie Hassan's 2009 survey exhibition title At the Far Edge of Words was inspired by a Mahmoud Darwish poem.
Thrilled to see that Brown University has established a faculty chair in Palestinian Studies named after Palestinian poet laureate Mahmoud Darwish,  an icon of Palestinian and Arab literature. The chair is the first of its kind at a major research university.  Professor Beshara Doumani has been appointed the first holder of the Mahmoud Darwish Chair in Palestinian Studies effective July 1, 2020. See the statement here.

The title of my 2009 survey exhibition, At the Far Edge of Words, was in tribute to Darwish, evoking a line from his poem, “I am from there.” The poem begins “I come from there and I remember” but concludes “I learned and dismantled all the words to construct a single one: Home.”
The survey exhibition included works over four decades of art-making.

The exhibition's publication was co-published by Museum London and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, University of British Columbia. The neon work Noon is in the collection of the Belkin Art Gallery.
